Cycling Odyssey: Top 5 Southwestern Ontario Cycling Trails

Southwestern Ontario offers enchanting landscapes, breathtaking trails, each revealing a unique blend of natural beauty, charming towns, and delightful café stops. Here is a guide to our top 5 Southwestern Ontario cycling trails.

1. Guelph to Goderich (G2G)

Stretching over 132 km, the G2G Trail seamlessly connects the vibrant city of Guelph to the serene town of Goderich on the Lake Shore of Lake Huron. Our regular rides with the Waterloo Cycling Club often feature a portion of this trail, and our favorite refueling spot is Anna Mae’s Restaurant & Bakery in Millbank. They have delightful tarts and coffee! If you want more info about the G2G visit their website.

2. Cambridge to Paris Rail Trail

  1. Covering almost 20 km along the Grand River, the Cambridge to Paris Rail Trail offers amazing river views and wonderful forests. Don’t miss the chance to take a coffee break at the Dog-Eared Cafe, the coziest bookstore cafe in Paris, ON.

3. LE & N Rail Trail

You can extend your journey through Paris, ON, utilizing the LE & N Rail Trail towards Port Dover. I was surprised to discover that a big part of this trail is paved. When you get to Port Dover, enjoy the view of Lake Erie and treat yourself to some ice cream at Cocoa Cabana Gourmet Cafe.

4. Elora Cataract Trailway

A recent addition to my favorites is the Elora Cataract Trailway, a 50ish km trail linking Elora and the Forks of Credit. During the Water Cycles Bikes and Blues Festival event back in September, we explored part of this trail and plan to return next year! Elora itself is a charming town with, in my opinion, the best cafes. Don’t miss the espresso bar at The Elora Cafe for a delightful coffee and lunch experience.

5. Walter Bean Grand River Trail

Last but certainly not least, the Walter Bean Grand River Trail spans 25 km, seamlessly connecting Waterloo, Kitchener, and Cambridge. Mostly gravel with some single-track sections, this trail offers a unique opportunity to bike alongside the Grand River, surrounded by meadows and woodlands. You can stop at City Café in Kitchener to refuel (an many other places as it is so close to the cities).
